چکیده

The USDA rice core collection, containing 1,801 accessions from 115 countries or sources and representing about 10% of the whole collection, was established by a stratified random-sampling method. A total of 990 accessions in the core collection that headed in 110 days or less and were 150 cm or less in height were evaluated for straighthead resistance on a 1 to 9 scale with 1 being very resistant and 9 being very susceptible. Twenty-six accessions showed resistance with straighthead ratings ranging from 1.3 to 3.0. The resistant accessions originated from 10 countries, and varied in heading from 62 to 101 days, and plant height from 68 to 124 cm. Ten accessions were straighthead tolerant with ratings from 3.3 to 4.0. The tolerant accessions were from 7 countries, and varied from 56 to 100 days in heading and 66 to 124 cm in plant height. A preponderance of the straighthead-resistant accessions are believed to be indicas, while most of the tolerant ones are believed to be japonicas. Thus, among the 990 accessions in the test, 36 accessions or 3.6% were either resistant (26) or tolerant (10). Twenty-four accessions or 2.4% had straighthead ratings from 4.1 to 5.0, 58 accessions or 5.9% from 5.1 to 6.0, 263 accessions or 26.6% from 6.1 to 7.0, 386 accessions or 39.0% from 7.1 to 8.0, and 223 accessions or 22.5% from 8.1 to 9.0. These resistant germplasms, diversified in origin, maturity, and plant height, can be used to improve straighthead resistance in rice breeding in the southern U.S. 1 This is a completed study. Association Analysis of Arsenic-Induced Straighthead in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Based on the Selected Population with a Modified Model

A rice physiological disorder makes mature panicle keep erect with empty grains termed as "straighthead." Straighthead causes yield losses and is a serious threat to rice production worldwide. Here, a new study of association mapping was conducted to identify QTL involved in straighthead. A subset of 380 accessions was selected from the USDA rice core collection and genotyped with 72 genome-wid...

Development of Genetic Markers Linked to Straighthead Resistance through Fine Mapping in Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Straighthead, a physiological disorder characterized by sterile florets and distorted spikelets, causes significant yield losses in rice, and occurs in many countries. The current control method of draining paddies early in the season stresses plants, is costly, and wastes water. Development of resistant cultivar is regarded as the most efficient way for its control. We mapped a QTL for straigh...

Development of cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) germplasm core collection in the National Plant Gene Bank of Iran

The large number and high diversity of genetic resource collections usually affect the accuracy of assessment and exploitation of the potential of these resources. The core collection provides the solution for the challenges of genetic resources manegement. This study aimed to develop the core collection of native barley germplasm of Iran. The germplasm collection of barley germplasm (Hordeum v...

Susceptibility of fruit from diverse apple and crabapple germplasm to attack from apple maggot (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of major concern to apple, Malus x domestica (Borkh.) production in eastern North America. Host plant resistance to apple maggot among apple germplasm has been previously evaluated among a small number of exotic Malus accessions and domestic hybrid selections. However, a large number of exotic accessions housed in USDA...

Susceptibility of fruit from diverse apple and crabapple germplasm to attack by plum curculio (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an important apple, Malus domestica Borkh., pest that significantly hinders sustainable apple production in eastern North America. The potential for host plant resistance to plum curculio among apple germplasm has never been rigorously evaluated. Thus, studies were conducted to assess the susceptibility of a number o...
